Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly session in New York. The meeting, described as warm and cordial, covered global, regional, and national issues of critical importance to Pakistan.
PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism, highlighting the UN’s central role in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges. He praised the Secretary-General’s leadership in promoting peace, stability, and inclusive global governance, while appreciating the UN’s efforts to amplify the voice of developing nations.
Acknowledging UN recognition of Pakistan’s relief work during last year’s devastating floods, the Prime Minister urged greater international cooperation on climate action. He stressed the need for additional climate finance to help vulnerable nations like Pakistan adapt to the mounting impacts of climate change.
Turning to regional priorities, PM Shehbaz underscored the urgency of resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with UN Security Council resolutions. He also raised concerns over violations of the Indus Waters Treaty and externally sponsored terrorism. Commending the Secretary-General’s role in easing tensions between Pakistan and India, he called for lasting peace in South Asia.
In Gaza, the Prime Minister expressed grave concern over the humanitarian crisis and reiterated Pakistan’s support for an immediate ceasefire, sustained humanitarian aid, and a political path leading to a viable Palestinian state.
PM Shehbaz reaffirmed Pakistan’s role as a constructive member of the UN Security Council and vowed to continue working for regional and global peace. Secretary-General Guterres, in turn, lauded Pakistan’s principled stance and active role at the UN, particularly its strong voice for developing nations.
