Russia and Pakistan are working to establish their first direct freight rail services linking Moscow with Faisalabad and Karachi, Russian Ambassador Albert Khorev said.
Khorev shared the details in an interview with Russian newspaper Izvestia. He said both countries are working with partners to develop freight connections along the proposed Moscow-Faisalabad and Moscow-Karachi routes.
New Routes Could Expand Trade
The proposed rail links could create a new transport corridor for commercial goods between Russia and Pakistan.
Moreover, the routes could strengthen overland trade between the two countries and improve access to markets along the corridor.
The Russian ambassador said the two sides are also considering possible participation by Belarus. Its involvement could further expand the proposed regional rail network.
Agreement Still Under Discussion
The project has faced several delays due to geopolitical tensions in the region during 2025 and early 2026.
However, discussions are continuing between the relevant parties. Khorev said officials are now finalizing an agreement covering freight services.
They are also identifying companies in countries along the proposed routes that could use the corridor to transport their goods.
No Launch Date Announced
The ambassador did not provide a specific timeline for the launch of the freight services.
Nevertheless, the proposed Moscow-Faisalabad and Moscow-Karachi connections could open a new rail option for Pakistan-Russia trade.
Furthermore, the project could support wider regional connectivity by linking businesses and transport networks across multiple countries.
Potential Boost for Regional Connectivity
A direct freight rail connection could reduce reliance on existing transport routes and provide businesses with another option for moving commercial cargo.
For Pakistan, the proposed services could strengthen its role as a trade link between Central Asia, Russia, and South Asian markets.
Meanwhile, further progress will depend on the final agreement, participating companies, and the resolution of logistical and regional challenges.
