Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has unveiled plans to launch the province’s first fleet of electric buses, marking a major step towards sustainable and inclusive public transport.
According to her announcement on X, a total of 1,100 electric buses are currently being produced in China, with the first batch of 240 buses scheduled to arrive in Punjab on August 22. This initiative targets underserved areas, as the buses will primarily be deployed in smaller districts that have never had access to organised public transport.
Each air-conditioned bus will be equipped with CCTV cameras for onboard safety and built-in wheelchair ramps, ensuring accessibility for persons with disabilities. The flat fare will be just Rs. 20, making it an affordable mobility solution for all.
The electric bus project is expected to improve daily commute options, promote environment-friendly transportation, and reduce urban pollution across Punjab. CM Maryam Nawaz emphasised that this move reflects her government’s commitment to inclusive infrastructure and environmental sustainability.
