President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have urged the nation to unite in the fight against climate change by actively participating in the Monsoon Tree Plantation Drive, launched under the Green Pakistan Programme.

More than 41 million saplings will be planted across the country during the three-month campaign, which runs from August to October.

In his message, President Zardari stressed that Pakistan is already facing devastating consequences of climate change, citing floods and cloudbursts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other regions. He said tree plantation was a decisive step to expand forest cover, restore degraded lands, and promote nature-based solutions. “The progress and well-being of any nation depend on preserving its forests and natural environment,” he added.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed these sentiments, calling the plantation campaign a national duty that requires the participation of all sectors of society, including women, youth, religious leaders, and institutions. He noted that Pakistan’s forest cover currently stands at only five per cent, which is far below the minimum needed for environmental security.

“The government is fully committed to this campaign,” the Prime Minister said. “By working together, we can increase forest cover, enhance soil fertility, and protect our natural resources for future generations.” He also reminded citizens that Pakistan remains among the countries most affected by climate change, highlighting recent monsoon floods as a stark reminder of the urgent need for climate action.

Officials said this year’s campaign is being observed under multiple themes to raise awareness about the role of different segments of society in tree plantation and environmental protection. The Prime Minister also emphasised that the drive would honour the sacrifices of those who lost their lives during rescue and relief operations.

Both leaders stressed that tree plantation not only combats climate change but also safeguards biodiversity, strengthens ecosystems, and contributes to a healthier, greener Pakistan.
