Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of protecting Pakistan’s mountains and glaciers on International Mountain Day, observed on December 11. He highlighted that Pakistan is home to major ranges including the Karakoram, Himalayas, and Hindu Kush, hosting over 7,000 glaciers that feed the Indus River, support agriculture, hydropower, and provide drinking water.
The Prime Minister warned that rapid glacier melting, climate change, and environmental degradation pose serious threats to water security, food production, biodiversity, and livelihoods. He called for coordinated measures, including sustainable tourism, climate resilience, responsible land use, and active participation of local communities to conserve these fragile ecosystems.
Shehbaz Sharif also stressed the role of mountain communities as custodians of cultural and historical heritage and urged youth to act as ambassadors for environmental protection. He emphasized that preserving Pakistan’s majestic mountains and glaciers is essential for future generations.
