 PM Shehbaz seeks expansion of Shanghai Electric Group’s coal projects in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday interacted with China’s Shanghai Electric Group to expand its coal mining projects in Pakistan, seeking a transition in country’s imported coal-powered plants to locally sourced coal.

In meeting with Chinese multinational power generation company, PM Sharif discussed expanding its coal mining projects in Pakistan and shift the country’s imported coal-fired power plants to local coal.

Speaking with Shanghai Electric Group Chairman Wu Lei which, PM Sharif said the government will provide all facilities to the Chinese investors for augmenting their projects.

He assured the delegation that the security of Chinese workers in Pakistan would not be compromised. Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing friendly ties and economic cooperation with China. The meeting received updates on various projects, including the Thar Coal Mine Development and 1320 Megawatt Coal Power Project, being undertaken by the Shanghai Electric Group in Pakistan.

The Group’s Thar Coal projects are helping Pakistan save $400 million in foreign exchange annually. Shanghai Electric Group is among the largest Chinese firms operating in Pakistan as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project.
