Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and the principles of the United Nations Charter. He made the remarks during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in New York.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The current UN General Assembly high-level week runs from September 18 to 28, with the General Debate beginning on September 22.
Pakistan Stresses UN Charter Principles
During the meeting, Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s strong attachment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
He also appreciated Guterres’ leadership and his role in upholding the Charter across the UN’s work.
Dialogue and Diplomacy for Regional Peace
The two leaders discussed major regional and international developments, including the situation in the Middle East.
Shehbaz Sharif stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in addressing regional tensions. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s stated commitment to peace and stability in the region.
The UN Secretary-General has likewise emphasized dialogue and de-escalation during the 81st General Assembly’s opening debate, particularly regarding conflicts in the Middle East.
Pakistan Reaffirms Support for Palestine
The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood.
He also raised concerns about what Pakistan describes as a growing trend of Islamophobia, calling for effective international action to address it.
Afghanistan and Terrorism Discussed
The talks also covered the situation in Afghanistan. Shehbaz Sharif briefed the UN chief on Pakistan’s concerns regarding an increase in terrorism that Pakistan says originates from Afghan soil.
Guterres, according to Pakistan’s official readout, commended Pakistan’s role at the UN and its contributions to international peace and security. He also acknowledged Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts and its role in diplomatic initiatives.
Focus on Multilateral Cooperation
The meeting highlighted Pakistan’s emphasis on multilateral diplomacy and the UN’s role in addressing regional and international challenges.
As the 81st General Assembly continues, discussions among member states remain focused on peace, security, development and international cooperation.
