Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump emphasized common interests during their latest summit in Washington.
Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, arrived at the White House for Xi’s first US visit in nearly a decade. Trump welcomed the Chinese delegation before the leaders held talks on trade, Taiwan, artificial intelligence and bilateral relations.
Leaders Stress Common Interests
During their speeches, both leaders highlighted areas where China and the United States can cooperate. Xi also warned about risks linked to artificial intelligence.
Trump said strong ties between the two peoples could continue to support prosperity and security. He also referred to the long-term relationship between the two countries.
Xi Raises Taiwan Issue
During their Oval Office meeting, Xi reiterated Beijing’s position on Taiwan. According to Chinese state media, he urged Trump to carefully consider Washington’s position and oppose Taiwan independence.
The Taiwan issue remains a major point of disagreement between China and the United States.
Trade Talks Reach New Arrangement
The two countries have faced a prolonged trade dispute. Xi later said that China and the US had reached a “new joint arrangement” on trade following another round of negotiations.
The development comes as both sides continue efforts to manage economic differences and expand areas of cooperation.
State Dinner Highlights Historical Ties
The leaders later attended a state dinner with their wives. Trump spoke about the enduring ties between the Chinese and American peoples.
Xi also referred to cooperation between China and the United States during World War II. He described that relationship as a friendship forged during the conflict and said it could continue across generations.
China-US Relations Remain Complex
The summit highlighted both cooperation and significant differences between Beijing and Washington. Trade, Taiwan and emerging technologies remain important areas of discussion.
At the same time, both leaders emphasized the value of dialogue and cooperation where their interests overlap.
