Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has imposed an immediate ban on the use of high-octane fuel in all government vehicles as part of the government’s austerity measures. The Prime Minister’s Office announced that the decision aims to ensure responsible use of national resources and reduce unnecessary expenditures.
Along with the ban, the government has increased the petroleum levy on high-octane fuel by Rs200 per litre, raising the total levy to Rs300 per litre. As a result, the price of High Octane Blending Component (HOBC) has reached Rs535 per litre in the country. Officials have also been directed to pay from their own pockets if the use of high-octane fuel becomes unavoidable.
The government expects the decision to save around Rs9 billion per month, with the savings to be used for public relief. Authorities have also been instructed to strictly monitor the implementation of the ban and take action against any violations, while petrol prices for ordinary vehicles and public transport fares will remain unchanged.
