Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is seeking faster deliveries of its planned Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft as the national carrier moves to expand its fleet and strengthen international operations.

According to shareholders familiar with the discussions, PIA has asked Boeing to accelerate the delivery of at least five aircraft from a planned order of 16 Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

PIA Pushes for Earlier Aircraft Delivery

The development follows a visit by PIA’s new management and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi to Boeing’s headquarters in Washington.

During the meeting, both sides agreed to finalize arrangements for the aircraft acquisition as soon as possible.

PIA stakeholders said the airline wants the first batch of aircraft earlier than Boeing’s original schedule. The manufacturer had initially indicated deliveries could begin in 2028, but discussions have reportedly moved the timeline forward to the first half of 2027.

Dreamliners to Expand International Operations

PIA expects the early induction of five Boeing 787 aircraft to significantly improve its international network.

A shareholder said the new aircraft would help activate more international routes, including destinations in Canada and other key markets.

Currently, PIA operates flights to more than 25 international destinations, including London, Dubai, Beijing, and Riyadh.

Fleet Expansion Under Revival Plan

The Boeing 787 is expected to become a major part of PIA’s long-term revival strategy.

The airline currently operates a mixed fleet that includes Boeing 777 wide-body aircraft, Airbus A320 aircraft, and ATR turboprop planes.

PIA’s new management aims to expand the airline’s fleet from the current 19 aircraft to 64 aircraft over the next eight years.

PIA Privatization and Future Growth

Pakistan completed the privatization of PIA in December, with an Arif Habib Corporation-led consortium acquiring a 75% stake in the airline for Rs135 billion.

The transaction valued the airline at Rs180 billion after years of financial challenges, with accumulated losses exceeding $2.8 billion.

The new management has focused on fleet modernization, operational improvements, and expanding international connectivity.

New Leadership Expected

PIA is also reportedly considering the appointment of former Ethiopian Airlines chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam as its new CEO, pending completion of security clearances.

The appointment would be part of broader efforts to bring international aviation expertise into the airline’s restructuring process.

Future Outlook

The accelerated delivery of Boeing 787 Dreamliners could mark a significant step in PIA’s transformation plan.

With a modernized fleet and expanded routes, the airline aims to improve passenger services, increase international operations, and strengthen its position in global aviation markets.
