Pakistan’s First Freight Train to Russia Nears Launch as negotiations enter the final stage to decide its departure schedule. The pilot service, hailed as a breakthrough in regional trade connectivity, will carry 16 containers of rice in its maiden run from Karachi to Moscow.
New Trade Corridor Through Central Asia
The route, established under the 9th Intergovernmental Commission (IGC), will connect Karachi Port to Moscow through Iran, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan. Pakistan Railways and Russian Railways (RZD) signed a contract in May 2025 to lay the foundation for this landmark corridor. Officials say this project reflects Pakistan’s growing focus on diversifying trade routes and reducing reliance on sea transport.
Faster, Cheaper Alternative to Sea Transport
The new overland corridor covers more than 7,000 kilometres. Freight is expected to reach Moscow within 20–25 days at a cost of about USD 5,600 per container. In comparison, sea transport takes 35–45 days, making the rail option not only faster but also more cost-effective. This efficiency will make Pakistani goods more competitive in Russian and Central Asian markets.
Expanding Agricultural Exports
The pilot train will carry rice, one of Pakistan’s leading export commodities. Officials emphasise that success in this first run will encourage more agricultural exports to Russia, including wheat, fruits, and vegetables. By lowering transport costs and reducing delivery times, exporters gain access to markets that were previously harder to reach.
Boost to Regional Connectivity
Authorities view the service as the first step toward a regular overland trade route. Once operational, it will improve Pakistan’s trade footprint in Russia and Central Asia, strengthen regional economic integration, and enhance transport resilience.
With Pakistan’s First Freight Train to Russia Nears Launch, experts believe the initiative will boost exports, attract investment in logistics, and pave the way for stronger bilateral ties between Islamabad and Moscow.
