Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Beijing. Both leaders expressed satisfaction over the growing momentum in bilateral ties, underlining their resolve to strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors.

Expanding Bilateral Relations

Recalling their last meeting in Astana, the two leaders highlighted the significant progress made in their relationship over the past year. PM Shehbaz noted: “Relations between the two countries have improved in recent years due to your personal commitment and interest.”

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Russia in areas such as trade connectivity, energy, agriculture, steel, defence, artificial intelligence, and education. The premier also underlined the importance of institutional mechanisms and regular engagement to keep the relationship on a positive trajectory.

Trade and Connectivity at the Forefront

PM Shehbaz emphasised the potential of the proposed trade corridor linking Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, calling it a driver of “regional connectivity and prosperity.”

He added that Pakistan-Russia trade saw a notable rise last year after Islamabad imported oil from Moscow. Stressing future opportunities, the Prime Minister said that flagship projects like the Pakistan Steel Mill revival and connectivity investments would stand as symbols of lasting friendship.

Putin’s Perspective on Relations

President Putin praised Pakistan as a “traditional partner in Asia” and welcomed the upward trajectory of ties. He noted that bilateral trade still required significant expansion and urged both sides to take practical steps in this direction.

The Russian leader also expressed condolences over Pakistan’s recent flood losses, saying: “We cherish these ties and are confident Pakistan will overcome its challenges under your leadership.”

Regional and Global Cooperation

Both leaders discussed key regional and global issues, including Afghanistan, South Asia, Palestine, Kashmir, and the Ukraine conflict. They agreed to strengthen coordination at multilateral platforms such as the UN and SCO, viewing these as important for global peace and stability.

Invitation to Russia

President Putin extended an invitation for PM Shehbaz to attend the SCO Heads of Government Summit in November, which the premier accepted, affirming his eagerness to visit Russia.
