Pakistan and the European Investment Bank (EIB) signed a declaration to advance the Karachi Water Infrastructure Framework project. The agreement, formalised during the 15th Pakistan–EU Joint Commission in Brussels, will support the rehabilitation and construction of key water treatment facilities in Karachi. The signing was attended by top officials from both sides, highlighting mutual commitment to modernising critical infrastructure.
The EIB financing package of approximately $60 million aims to expand safe water supply and enhance water security for Karachi’s growing population. Officials said the project reflects Pakistan’s commitment to modernising urban services and promoting climate-resilient infrastructure in its largest metropolitan areas. Work will include upgrading existing sewage networks and implementing advanced treatment technologies.
Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Muhammad Humair Karim, welcomed the EIB’s increased engagement, highlighting Pakistan’s interest in expanding the pipeline of EIB-supported projects. The Secretary emphasised strengthening ties with European partners to tackle Pakistan’s development challenges. The signing demonstrates ongoing Pakistan–EU cooperation and shared priorities in sustainable development and public service delivery.
