Pakistan Navy, China discovered vast Offshore Gas Reserves in a joint seabed survey that confirmed significant deposits beneath the sea. The exploration, launched under the vision of the Chief of Naval Staff, is being seen as a potential game-changer for Pakistan’s energy security.
Revelation on Navy Day
Rear Admiral (retd) Fawad Amin Baig revealed the discovery on Pakistan Navy Day, celebrated annually on September 8 to honour naval achievements. He stressed that the findings highlight not only the strategic importance of Pakistan’s waters but also their economic value.
Marine Resources and Economic Potential
Baig explained that the country’s seas are rich in minerals and contain untapped marine resources. If used effectively, these reserves could reshape Pakistan’s energy outlook. He credited the Navy for leading the exploration, while China’s technical support was vital in confirming the offshore gas deposits.
Need for Investment and Technology
The former naval officer emphasised the next challenge: attracting investors. He stated that advanced technology and financing are crucial to convert these resources into usable energy. However, he warned that hostile fifth-generation warfare tactics often discourage investors whenever Pakistan moves toward progress.
Role of SIFC and Joint Cooperation
Despite these risks, Baig expressed confidence in the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) and the combined efforts of political and military leadership. According to him, strong policies and investor-friendly reforms are essential to turn this discovery into a reality.
China–Pakistan Energy Cooperation
Recent agreements between China and Pakistan highlight deeper collaboration in oil and gas exploration, natural gas hydrates, and offshore development. Beijing has also encouraged its companies to invest in Pakistan’s marine energy sector, which could accelerate the utilisation of these reserves.
Path to Energy Self-Reliance
The discovery of offshore gas reserves strengthens Pakistan’s case for energy self-reliance and regional cooperation. With the right policies, investment, and technology, the Pakistan Navy, along with China, can unlock marine resources that promise to boost both economic growth and national security.
