Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Dr Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, on Friday in Islamabad to discuss ways to enhance economic and trade cooperation between Pakistan and Iran.
During the meeting, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s eagerness to strengthen collaboration with Iran in key areas of mutual interest, including economic development, bilateral trade, and regional connectivity. He highlighted the two nations’ shared commitment to global peace, prosperity, and the unity of the Muslim Ummah, emphasising dialogue and diplomacy as the only means for resolving conflicts worldwide.
Both sides agreed that Pakistan and Iran, having faced the scourge of terrorism, share a common resolve for promoting stability and constructive engagement in the region. The prime minister also extended his respect and best wishes to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pazeshkian.
Speaker Ghalibaf, for his part, expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its “valued and steadfast” support during the Iran-Israel conflict earlier this year. “The people of Iran deeply appreciate Pakistan’s solidarity during the 12-day war,” he said, reaffirming Iran’s commitment to expanding trade and development partnerships with Pakistan.
He also praised the close cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries and conveyed warm greetings from President Pazeshkian.
Pakistan and Iran have, in recent months, signed several agreements and memorandums of understanding aimed at deepening cooperation in multiple sectors. The two sides are working to raise bilateral trade from $3 billion to $10 billion, reflecting a growing alignment in economic priorities.
The meeting was also attended by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi.
