Pakistan has officially shown strong interest in partnering with China to develop sodium-ion battery technology for electric vehicles (EVs), marking it as a key focus in future bilateral cooperation.
At a press briefing held at the Pakistani Embassy in Beijing, Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal emphasised Pakistan’s eagerness to collaborate with Chinese companies to advance EV technology, especially sodium-ion batteries. He highlighted that electric vehicles represent a rapidly growing sector for Pakistan and praised China’s global leadership in battery innovation.
Iqbal also announced that the upcoming Pakistan-China Business Conference, scheduled for September 4 in China, will bring together industry leaders from both countries. Over 250 Pakistani and more than 200 Chinese companies are expected to participate, with a focus on sectors such as electric vehicles, solar energy, chemicals, and agriculture. The conference aims to facilitate business matchmaking and promote strategic partnerships.
The minister pointed out that Chinese investors have significant opportunities in Pakistan’s EV manufacturing sector, citing cost advantages and access to an expanding domestic market. He stressed that such collaborations align with Pakistan’s broader goals of enhancing energy efficiency, creating jobs, and promoting sustainable economic growth.
Pakistan’s National Electric Vehicle Policy 2025–2030 aims to ensure that 30% of all new vehicle sales are electric by 2030, with a long-term goal of achieving net-zero transport emissions by 2060. The policy offers a range of incentives, including tax breaks, subsidies, and infrastructure support, to attract both foreign investment and boost local EV production.
Several Chinese EV manufacturers, including BYD and Chery, are already active in Pakistan, contributing to vehicle assembly, charging infrastructure development, and joint ventures, signalling a growing Sino-Pak cooperation in the electric mobility sector.
