The Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project has launched a large-scale plantation campaign to promote environmental sustainability and ecological restoration.

The drive targets 54,000 trees and plants of various indigenous species across the project area. Officials launched the campaign on Friday to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day.

The project is carrying out the initiative in collaboration with the Mohmand Forest Division.

Officials Lead Plantation Drive

General Manager and Project Director Mohmand Dam Fasihullah Paracha led the campaign by planting a sapling at the project site.

The Chief Engineer (Civil), Director Agronomy, Director Social Resettlement and Environment, contractors’ representatives, and senior security officials also participated.

Project officials said the campaign will help create a greener environment around the dam site. It will also restore the natural landscape and reduce pollution.

Moreover, the plantation drive will support biodiversity and improve the local ecosystem.

Part of Environmental Management Strategy

Officials described tree plantation as an important part of the project’s environmental management strategy.

The initiative reflects the project’s wider commitment to sustainable development. It also aims to improve environmental conditions as construction activities continue.

Mohmand Dam Project Overview

The Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project is being developed by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) on the Swat River in Mohmand District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A joint venture between China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC) and Descon Engineering Limited is constructing the project.

Once completed, the multipurpose dam will have an installed hydropower capacity of 800 megawatts. It is expected to generate around 2.86 billion units of clean electricity annually.

Water Storage and Irrigation Benefits

The project will also store approximately 1.29 million acre-feet of water.

In addition, the dam is expected to help reduce flood risks in the Peshawar Valley. It will also irrigate nearly 18,233 acres of new agricultural land.

The project will further supplement irrigation supplies for around 160,000 acres of existing farmland.

Supporting a Greener Future

The 54,000-sapling plantation drive adds an important environmental dimension to the Mohmand Dam project.

By expanding green cover and supporting biodiversity, the initiative aims to balance infrastructure development with environmental protection.

As a result, the campaign is expected to contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable landscape around the project area.
