GDA-led coastal infrastructure supports the local economy and advances Pakistan’s blue economy agenda. Fishing communities in Gwadar are experiencing improved livelihoods following the recent operationalisation of two modern fishing jetties in Surbandar and Pishukan, developed by the Gwadar Development Authority (GDA).
These state-of-the-art facilities are providing free unloading services for fishermen’s daily catch, worth millions of rupees, significantly cutting costs and improving efficiency for the local fishing community, according to Gwadar Pro.
Strengthening the Coastal Economy
The initiative is being hailed as a milestone in strengthening Gwadar’s coastal economy. By modernising fishing infrastructure, the GDA aims to empower local fishermen, promote job creation, and fuel economic activity across the coastal belt.
The project aligns with Pakistan’s national vision to expand its blue economy, which focuses on the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and job opportunities.
Provincial Investment in the Fisheries Sector
In addition to federal efforts, the Government of Balochistan is actively investing in the fisheries sector through the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2025–26. For the current fiscal year, Rs22.334 million has been allocated for fisheries-related initiatives to uplift the livelihoods of fisherfolk.
Among the key projects is the “Basic Infrastructure Development for Balochistan Fisheries Department,” which has already utilised Rs35 million, with an additional Rs13 million earmarked in the new PSDP.
Rs300 Million Boat Repair Project Launched
To further support the fishing community, Balochistan has launched a Rs300 million initiative titled:
“Establishment of Boat Repairing Workshop and Provision of Boat Engine Spare Parts on Subsidised Rates.”
This project aims to reduce operational downtime for fishermen by offering maintenance services and engine parts at subsidised rates, with Rs 10 million allocated for the current year.
Advancing Sustainable Development Goals
These targeted interventions in Gwadar and across Balochistan not only improve the livelihoods of local communities but also contribute to broader sustainable development goals. By focusing on coastal infrastructure, capacity building, and welfare-oriented services, both federal and provincial governments are accelerating progress in Pakistan’s underdeveloped maritime regions.
