The second batch of a technical training program under the Diamer Basha Dam Project has been launched in Chilas to equip local youth with market-ready skills.
Officials inaugurated the program at the Vocational Training Institute located in WAPDA’s Harpan Das Model Village. More than 200 students from Diamer district have enrolled in this phase.
The initiative is being implemented by the Gilgit-Baltistan Rural Support Program in collaboration with the Water and Power Development Authority. It aims to develop a skilled workforce in communities surrounding the dam project.
Over three months, trainees will receive both theoretical and practical instruction. The program covers seven technical trades, including solar technology, UPS systems, air conditioning, industrial electrical work, automobile repair, building painting, and masonry.
These skills align with the needs of large infrastructure projects and evolving labor market demands. As a result, participants can improve their employment prospects locally and internationally.
The training program forms part of broader socio-economic development efforts linked to the dam project. It also reflects ongoing collaboration with international partners, including China.
Earlier, 133 trainees completed the first batch of the program. Overall, more than 400 youth from Diamer district have benefited from similar initiatives.
Officials said many graduates have already secured jobs or started small businesses. Therefore, the program continues to play a key role in promoting sustainable livelihoods in the region.
