China’s first Type 076 amphibious assault ship, the Sichuan, embarked on its maiden sea trial on November 14, 2025, less than a year after its launch. The PLA Navy reported that the trial will primarily test the ship’s power, electrical, and support systems, marking a significant milestone in the vessel’s construction progress.
With a full-load displacement of over 40,000 tons, the Type 076 features a dual-island superstructure, a full-length flight deck, and integrates electromagnetic catapult and arresting technologies, allowing it to carry fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, amphibious equipment, and drones. Experts highlight that these advanced systems elevate the ship beyond traditional amphibious operations, giving it the capability to function as a light aircraft carrier.
Military analysts emphasized that the quick transition from launch to sea trials demonstrates China’s growing proficiency in large warship construction. The Type 076 is only the second Chinese vessel to use electromagnetic catapult and arresting technology, following the recently commissioned aircraft carrier Fujian. Its capabilities also allow integration with drones of various types, extending its operational flexibility.
The Sichuan is expected to first validate basic ship functions, including propulsion and power delivery, before testing more advanced features such as the electromagnetic catapult. Analysts believe that its strategic role will enhance the PLA Navy’s amphibious and far-sea combat capabilities, enabling it to operate in tandem with other aircraft carriers.
