China’s railway freight sector witnessed stable growth in the first half of 2025, supported by smoother network operations and enhanced services, according to the national railway operator.
Between January and June, 1.98 billion tonnes of cargo were transported across the national railway network, showing a 3% year-on-year increase. The average number of loaded freight cars per day reached 182,400, marking a 4% rise from the same period last year, according to China State Railway Group Co., Ltd.
The company attributed the growth to efficient use of the integrated rail network and continued market-oriented reforms in freight transportation, aimed at boosting capacity, efficiency, and service quality.
Coal remained a major commodity, with 1.02 billion tonnes transported. Freight volumes for metallurgical goods and grain also grew by 8.6% and 9.8%, respectively.
International rail freight remained strong. Central Asia-bound trains made 7,349 trips, a 25% increase over the previous year. The China-Laos Railway handled nearly 3.03 million tonnes of cross-border cargo, up 9%.
