A spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Commerce voiced strong disapproval and resolute opposition on Monday to the European Union’s latest sanctions move, which targets Chinese companies and financial institutions as part of its 18th sanctions package against Russia.
The spokesperson, responding to a press question, criticized the EU for ignoring China’s repeated objections and unilaterally penalizing Chinese entities based on unsubstantiated claims, including sanctions on two Chinese financial institutions.
The spokesperson reiterated that China consistently stands against unilateral sanctions that are not backed by international law or authorized by the United Nations Security Council.
It was further stressed that the EU’s actions contradict agreements made by Chinese and EU leaders and risk seriously damaging economic, trade, and financial relations between the two sides.
China called on the EU to immediately stop the wrongful inclusion of Chinese entities in its sanctions list and warned that it will take all necessary steps to protect the legal rights and interests of its companies and financial institutions.
