China willing to uphold multilateralism with France, Wang Yi stated during a telephonic conversation with diplomatic adviser to French President.
Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, stated on Tuesday that China seeks to maintain close high-level exchanges with France, enhance strategic coordination, and jointly uphold true multilateralism.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made these remarks during a phone conversation with Emmanuel Bonne, diplomatic adviser to the French President, held at Bonne’s request.
During the discussion, Wang asked Bonne to convey President Xi Jinping’s greetings to French President Emmanuel Macron. He highlighted the growing complexity and instability in the international landscape, emphasizing the importance of strategic dialogue between China and France, particularly as 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of World War II’s victory.
As permanent members of the UN Security Council and strategic partners, China and France must strengthen coordination, safeguard multilateralism, uphold the role of the UN, and ensure the stability of global trade, industrial, and supply chains. Wang also opposed unipolar dominance and the prioritization of national interests over global cooperation.
Wang stressed the importance of resolving economic and trade disputes between China and Europe through consultation and urged France to collaborate in sending a message of unity and cooperation to foster stable China-France and China-Europe relations.
Bonne, in response, conveyed President Macron’s greetings to Xi and reaffirmed France’s commitment to its strong relationship with China. Given the current global uncertainties, he emphasized France’s desire to maintain high-level exchanges and strategic dialogue with China to counter geopolitical divisions.
France opposes trade wars and tariff conflicts and seeks to resolve economic disputes with China through dialogue. Bonne stressed the need for balanced and sustainable economic and trade relations between China, France, and Europe, adhering to WTO principles.
The discussion also covered the Ukraine conflict. Bonne outlined France’s stance and expressed hope that China would play a key role in securing a fair, stable, and lasting peace agreement.
Wang reiterated China’s position, advocating for crisis resolution through dialogue and negotiation. He emphasized that peace efforts should be voluntary, not imposed by third parties, and must serve the interests of all involved nations. China supports an inclusive peace process and remains willing to collaborate with Europe and other stakeholders to advance peace.
Additionally, both sides exchanged views on the Iranian nuclear issue.
