Wang Yi’s Call with Rubio
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a phone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, stressing that both nations should steer their “giant ships” forward under the strategic guidance of their leaders. He emphasised that stable China-US relations require full implementation of the consensus reached between Presidents Xi Jinping and Marco Rubio.
China’s Warning Over Core Interests
Wang strongly criticised recent US actions and statements, saying they undermine China’s legitimate rights, interfere in its internal affairs, and damage bilateral ties. He urged Washington to act cautiously on sensitive issues, particularly Taiwan, which Beijing considers a red line.
Wang recalled how China and the US once fought side by side during World War II. In today’s era, he said, both sides must again work together to promote peace, tackle global challenges, and fulfil their responsibilities as major powers.
Parallel Military Dialogue
Separately, Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun held video talks with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. Dong reiterated that supporting Taiwan independence or using it as leverage against China is unacceptable and “doomed to fail.”
Both sides described the Wang-Rubio conversation as timely and productive, agreeing to manage their differences, explore practical cooperation, and promote stability. Wang reaffirmed that China welcomes collaboration but will not compromise on its core interests.
