Chinese and Pakistani employees at the Mohmand Hydropower Project marked China’s National Day with a flag-raising ceremony at the project site.
The ceremony took place on October 1, marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Chinese and Pakistani colleagues working on the project attended the event.
Chinese and Pakistani Teams Work Together
According to Energy China Pakistan, teams from both countries are working together on the project’s main dam and tunnels.
The ceremony highlighted the cooperation between Chinese and Pakistani workers involved in the major hydropower development.
Mohmand Dam to Generate 800 MW
The Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project is being built on the Swat River in Mohmand district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The site lies around 5 kilometres upstream of the existing Munda Headworks.
The project includes a 213-metre-high concrete-face rockfill dam. It will have an installed power generation capacity of 800 MW.
Moreover, the project is expected to generate around 2.86 billion units of electricity annually.
Major Water Storage and Flood Control Benefits
Beyond electricity generation, the multipurpose project will provide around 1.29 million acre-feet of gross water storage.
The dam will also help control floods in downstream areas. In addition, it is designed to supply 300 million gallons of drinking water per day to Peshawar.
Supporting Agriculture and Local Development
The project will also support irrigation in the surrounding areas. Furthermore, its development is expected to contribute to local socio-economic activity.
The National Day ceremony therefore offered a glimpse of the Chinese and Pakistani teams working together on a major infrastructure project with energy, water, and development benefits.
