China has unveiled its first air taxis in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, featuring electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The showcase included four different models with safety-focused designs, aimed at transforming urban transport and low-altitude logistics across Chinese cities.
The eVTOLs offer multiple options, including personal purchase or shared ride models, and specialized vehicles for medical transport. One prototype functions as a mini flying ICU, capable of triage and patient monitoring, reducing emergency costs compared to traditional helicopters.
This launch aligns with China’s national strategy to accelerate the low-altitude economy. New civil aviation regulations and government guidelines will support eVTOL operations below 300 meters, aiming to cover 90% of urban low-altitude airways with mobile network connectivity by 2027.
