China has expressed strong disappointment over the United States’ repeated veto of a United Nations Security Council draft resolution intended to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the UN, emphasised this on Wednesday during a debate on the use of veto powers.
Highlighting the grave humanitarian situation in Gaza, Fu said the ongoing hostilities have caused massive civilian casualties and a severe humanitarian catastrophe, undermining international law and basic human conscience. He criticised the US for consistently blocking Security Council actions, pointing out that without Washington’s repeated vetoes, the Council could have acted more effectively to address the crisis.
Fu condemned the militarisation of humanitarian aid and attacks on civilians and aid workers, urging Israel to immediately halt all military operations in Gaza and abandon its plan to take over Gaza City. He reaffirmed China’s support for the two-state solution as the only viable way to resolve the Palestinian issue and called on the international community to take decisive and irreversible measures to implement it, opposing any unilateral actions that could undermine its foundation.
China remains committed to working with the international community to end hostilities and pursue a fair, comprehensive, and lasting resolution to the Palestinian question, Fu added.
