Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu emphasised the need to reinforce the role of the United Nations (UN), urging reforms to help the organisation effectively tackle global challenges. Speaking at a press conference marking the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory in World War II and the founding of the UN, Ma said the world body’s authority must be upheld rather than undermined.
He noted that the UN Charter’s vision has yet to be fully realised, pointing to growing unilateralism, withdrawals from treaties, and the selective application of international law by certain countries, which weaken the international order.
Ma stressed that reforms should particularly focus on enhancing the representation and voice of developing countries in global governance. He added that for eight decades, the UN has represented the collective aspirations for peace and development, making it the most universal and authoritative international organisation.
Reaffirming China’s support, Ma said Beijing remains committed to true multilateralism and will work with all nations to strengthen the UN’s central role in building a fairer, more equitable system of global governance as it enters its next 80 years.
