China has called on the global community to uphold the legitimate right of all countries to peaceful tech use, especially developing nations, to access peaceful scientific and technological advancements while working toward the shared objective of controlling the spread of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).
Speaking at a UN Security Council session on WMD non-proliferation, Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasised that non-proliferation efforts must not come at the cost of restricting peaceful uses. He urged member states to lift unjust barriers that hinder developing countries from benefiting from technology for civilian purposes.
Geng underscored that addressing WMD proliferation requires inclusive, multilateral cooperation and a global security framework based on shared, sustainable, and comprehensive principles. He highlighted the importance of tackling the root causes of proliferation and ensuring that all nations’ security concerns are respected.
Reaffirming its stance, China reiterated its firm opposition to WMD proliferation and its strong support for the international non-proliferation architecture, particularly the UN Security Council’s Resolution 1540. Geng noted that China continues to meet its obligations under the resolution and is actively engaged in fostering international collaboration to improve non-proliferation governance.
China, he added, remains committed to working with the global community to enhance security cooperation, implement Resolution 1540 effectively, and contribute to lasting international.
