The Balochistan government has decided to expand specialist, diagnostic, and critical-care services at the GDA Pak-China Friendship Hospital in Gwadar to improve healthcare access across the coastal region.
The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Balochistan Chief Secretary Shakeel Qadir Khan on July 27. Officials reviewed the hospital’s current services, funding requirements, and plans to strengthen medical facilities.
Major Healthcare Upgrades Planned
Officials agreed to begin the procurement and installation of an MRI scanner at the hospital. In addition, the government plans to expand several essential healthcare services.
The proposed upgrades include:
- Dialysis services
- Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Neonatal care facilities
- Emergency services
- Surgical facilities
- Laboratory services
Furthermore, the expansion plan includes additional incubators for newborns and stronger specialist care in ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat (ENT), and cardiology.
Funding to Support Expansion
During the meeting, officials agreed to accelerate the release of outstanding funds needed for the expansion project.
However, authorities did not disclose the total funding required or provide a timeline for procuring equipment and completing the planned upgrades.
Improving Healthcare in Gwadar
Chief Secretary Shakeel Qadir Khan said the Pak-China Friendship Hospital has become an important healthcare center for residents of Gwadar and the wider Makran region.
He noted that the hospital provides free medical treatment and has reduced the need for patients to travel to Karachi, Quetta, and other cities for specialized healthcare.
As a result, local residents now have better access to essential medical services closer to home.
Government Directs Early Implementation
The chief secretary instructed the relevant departments to arrange the necessary medical equipment, recruit required staff, and secure funding to complete the expansion without delay.
Moreover, he emphasized that strengthening the hospital’s capacity would help ensure timely, high-quality healthcare for people across Gwadar and neighboring districts.
