Pakistan is set to assume the chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of State for 2026-27.
The formal declaration was signed in Bishkek on Tuesday. The development marks an important diplomatic milestone for Pakistan.
Bishkek Summit Brings Leaders Together
Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov chaired the two-day summit as the SCO’s rotating chair.
Leaders from China, Russia, Pakistan, India, Iran, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan attended the meeting. The SCO is also marking its 25th anniversary this year.
SCO Leaders Adopt Bishkek Declaration
The participating leaders signed the Bishkek Declaration during the summit. They also approved several institutional and security-related measures.
These included amendments to the SCO Charter and regulations for the Universal Centre for Countering Security Threats and Challenges. In addition, leaders approved regulations for the Anti-Drug Centre.
28 Documents Adopted at Summit
The summit produced 28 outcome documents covering several areas. These included regional security, economic cooperation, cultural and humanitarian exchanges, and organisational development.
Moreover, the agreements aim to strengthen coordination among SCO member states.
Pakistan’s Role in the SCO
Pakistan’s upcoming chairmanship will provide an opportunity to promote regional cooperation. Islamabad can also highlight economic connectivity, trade, security, and development during its tenure.
Furthermore, the chairmanship comes as the SCO marks 25 years of regional engagement.
