Pakistan has officially joined the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) as a founding member, reinforcing its commitment to international cooperation in artificial intelligence and equitable access to emerging technologies.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar signed the agreement on behalf of Pakistan during a ceremony held in Shanghai.
Commitment to Global AI Cooperation
By becoming a founding member of WAICO, Pakistan pledged to strengthen international collaboration in artificial intelligence. The country will also work to promote the interests of developing nations, particularly those in the Global South.
Moreover, Pakistan will cooperate with other WAICO member states to bridge the global AI divide and encourage fair access to AI technologies.
Supporting Inclusive AI Governance
The government said the decision reflects Pakistan’s support for stronger global AI governance. It also aims to ensure that the benefits of artificial intelligence reach developing countries and contribute to sustainable development.
In addition, Pakistan intends to promote responsible and inclusive AI development through international partnerships.
Agreement Signed During WAIC in Shanghai
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC), one of the world’s largest AI events, held annually in Shanghai.
According to the organizers, this year’s exhibition features more than 1,100 companies showcasing over 3,000 cutting-edge technologies and products.
Furthermore, more than 300 new AI products and solutions are making their global debut during the event.
Showcasing the Future of AI
The exhibition highlights major sectors, including intelligent computing and embodied AI.
More than 200 companies are participating in each category, reflecting rapid innovation and growing investment in the global artificial intelligence industry.
New Opportunities for Pakistan
Pakistan’s membership in WAICO is expected to strengthen its role in international AI governance.
As a result, the country may gain greater opportunities for collaboration in AI research, innovation, technology development, and knowledge sharing with partner nations.
