China discovers rare-quartz in Tibet

China has found a new source of high-purity quartz in western Tibet. This discovery could change the tech industry. It may significantly lower China’s reliance on foreign imports for this critical mineral.

A Major Discovery in Tibet

High-purity quartz is a premium manufacturing material. It is essential for making solar panels and advanced semiconductors. China currently dominates the global market for many high-tech products. However, it lacks enough domestic sources for this rare quartz. To fill the gap, China has long relied on imports, primarily from the United States.

The Significance of High-Purity Quartz

Tibetan leucogranites are a specific type of granite largely made of quartz, a mineral that is otherwise highly abundant in the Earth’s continental crust. However, high-purity quartz—which requires a silica content of at least 99.9%—is exceptionally rare and difficult to find in nature. This ultra-pure material is highly prized for its unique physical properties, including incredible resistance to heat and corrosion, excellent electrical insulation, and low thermal expansion.

Because of these unique traits, high-purity quartz serves as a vital foundational building block for emerging tech industries. It is the primary raw material used to produce polysilicon, the essential component that allows solar panels to convert sunlight into usable energy. Additionally, it is used to create quartz crucibles, which are specialized, heat-resistant containers absolutely necessary for manufacturing computer chips, advanced electronics, optical components, and solar cells.

Rewriting the Supply Chain

Recent geological findings could soon change this dependency. A study published in the European Journal of Mineralogy evaluated Tibet’s leucogranites as a potential raw material source.

A research team from the University of Science and Technology of China and the China Geological Survey led the study. They confirmed that these rocks have massive potential. The quartz found in Tibet achieves a silica purity level above 99.995%. This exceptional purity easily clears the threshold needed for high-tech manufacturing.

According to the researchers, the discovery offers China a major opportunity to develop its own high-end quartz resources. The study showed that the high-purity quartz supply exceeded the threshold required for use in hi-tech manufacturing. The finding “offers a significant opportunity to develop high-end quartz resources in China, ensuring a stable and strategic supply of high-purity quartz raw materials”, the authors said.
