A Chinese investor in Pakistan has called for a balanced view of the country’s investment climate. He described Pakistan as an emerging market with both opportunities and risks.
Andy Liao, who runs an export factory in Gwadar, shared his views in an interview. He said online discussions about Pakistan have become highly polarised.
Some investors see Pakistan as a place for easy profits. Others consider it too risky for business. Liao said both views are too simplistic.
He explained that developed markets often have strict regulations. These markets also have high entry barriers. Opportunities are usually limited to well-resourced investors.
In contrast, developing markets like Pakistan offer more room for growth. However, they also come with higher uncertainty and risk.
“Opportunity in such environments is never free,” he said. He added that success depends on strong judgement and execution. Resilience is also important.
Liao shared his own business experience. He said companies may face administrative inefficiency and complex procedures. Sometimes, investors may also experience unfair treatment.
Despite these challenges, he noted that meaningful projects can receive government support. This is especially true for initiatives that benefit the economy and public welfare.
He said such support depends more on the value of the project. It is less about personal connections.
Liao also pointed out key challenges for new investors. These include information gaps, language barriers, and structural weaknesses. Such issues can create a negative first impression.
He advised investors to focus on three areas. First, conduct detailed market research. Second, understand local laws and institutions. Third, build a reliable local team.
From a broader perspective, he highlighted Pakistan’s young population. This could lead to a demographic dividend and long-term growth.
He said this mix of risk and opportunity is common in emerging markets. Investors should avoid extreme views. Instead, they should assess their own capacity and patience.
Liao concluded that long-term cooperation between China and Pakistan offers strong potential. Investors who prepare well can benefit from future opportunities.
