Egypt has put forward a proposal to link its Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) with Gwadar Port, signaling Cairo’s growing interest in the CPEC supply chain. The announcement came during Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty’s visit to Pakistan, where he met Prime Minister and FM Ishaq Dar to discuss strategic trade and industrial collaboration.
The corridor aims to connect two major global maritime nodes: SCZONE, a key gateway handling nearly 12% of global maritime trade, and Gwadar, China’s emerging western sea outlet under CPEC. By linking the two, Egypt seeks to facilitate smoother goods movement from China and Central Asia to the Mediterranean while promoting investment and local industrialization in the Egyptian economic zone.
Officials confirmed that both countries plan to enhance private-sector engagement and re-activate the Joint Business Council to explore investment and trade opportunities. The agreement also emphasizes regional connectivity and joint cooperation in logistics and supply chain networks under China’s Maritime Silk Road initiative.
