China’s top legislator, Zhao Leji, has called on member states of the Group of Friends of Neutrality to unite in revitalising multilateralism and reforming global governance systems to ensure fairness and inclusivity.
In a video address to the second meeting of parliamentary leaders from member states, Zhao, Chairman of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, said the Group has become a valuable platform for fostering understanding, trust, and cooperation since its establishment five years ago.
He highlighted that the world, now facing turbulence and transformation, needs stronger multilateralism. Noting the 80th anniversary of both the UN’s founding and the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War, Zhao urged collective efforts to protect peace and international order.
Referring to China’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI) launched in September, Zhao explained that the initiative promotes sovereign equality, the rule of law, and people-centred global governance. He described it as a major contribution to international cooperation, complementing China’s earlier Global Development, Security, and Civilisation Initiatives.
He emphasised the role of legislative bodies in advancing fair and just governance, strengthening dialogue, and building a community with a shared future for humanity. Zhao called on all members to uphold the UN-centred international system and to reform institutions to reflect modern realities.
Zhao also reaffirmed China’s close ties with Turkmenistan, the founding member of the Group, and pledged deeper cooperation to advance the vision of a China–Turkmenistan community with a shared future.
Established in 2020 at Turkmenistan’s initiative, the Group of Friends of Neutrality now includes 18 member nations dedicated to promoting peace, dialogue, and neutrality in international affairs.
