The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force is preparing to host its much-anticipated aviation open day in Changchun, Jilin Province, later this week, marking a major showcase of China’s air power and technological advances.
For the first time, the J-20 stealth fighter, described as the “star of the show”, will be placed on static ground display, giving the public a closer look at China’s most advanced combat aircraft. Alongside the J-20, the exhibition will feature 125 exhibits across 93 types of aircraft, vehicles, radars, and air defence systems.
The event will be divided into three categories: active-duty aircraft, retired legacy planes, and ground equipment, to illustrate the PLA Air Force’s modernisation journey. Visitors will also have the chance to step inside fighter jet cockpits and explore the cargo bay of a Y-20A heavy transport aircraft.
In the skies, adaptive training flights will set the tone for the airshow. Demonstrations include S-shaped tactical manoeuvres by a YU-20A aerial refuelling tanker and the first flyover by an H-6 bomber formation. Aerobatic teams such as Bayi, Red Falcon, and Sky Wing are scheduled to perform live shows.
Experts highlight that the J-20’s public display signals the PLA Air Force’s confidence and transparency in showcasing its progress in weapons, equipment, and training. Immersive zones with flight simulators, drone operations, and parachute experiences will further connect the event to the public.
