Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi on Wednesday, reaffirming China’s commitment to closer ties with Afghanistan.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Communist Party of China’s Political Bureau, congratulated Afghanistan on its development progress and said China will continue to back Kabul in pursuing stability, governance, and growth. He stressed Beijing’s readiness to expand cooperation in security, counter-terrorism, trade, agriculture, water resources, poverty reduction, and cultural exchanges.
Highlighting security concerns, Wang called on Afghanistan to take firm action against the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), a UN-listed terrorist group operating from Afghan soil, noting that eliminating such threats would further boost bilateral relations and regional stability.
Muttaqi expressed gratitude for China’s longstanding support against foreign interference and underlined that Afghanistan values Beijing as a cornerstone of its foreign policy. He assured that Afghan soil would not be used against China’s security and pledged stronger collaboration in counter-terrorism and regional peace efforts.
Both sides emphasised mutual trust, good-neighbourly relations, and long-term stability as guiding principles of their partnership.
