NDMA Warns of Widespread Heavy Rainfall
The National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has issued a nationwide weather alert, warning of heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides across several regions within the next 12 to 24 hours. Rainfall between 50 and 100 millimetres or more is expected in vulnerable areas, prompting authorities to remain on high alert.
Punjab and Northern Regions at Risk
In Punjab, torrential downpours are forecast in Murree, Rawalpindi, Chakwal, Jhelum, and Attock, while moderate to heavy rain is likely in Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Chiniot, and Mandi Bahauddin. Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Narowal, and Sheikhupura may also see intermittent showers with chances of waterlogging.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Chitral, Dir, Bajaur, Mohmand, and Kohistan, landslides and soil erosion pose major risks.
Sindh Braces for Urban Flooding
Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Jamshoro, Dadu, and Sukkur, faces an elevated threat of urban flooding due to poor drainage systems and continuous rainfall. Rising water levels in the Indus River and its tributaries may inundate low-lying areas, severely disrupting daily life and transport.
Balochistan Faces Torrential Showers
Districts in Balochistan, including Quetta, Zhob, Ziarat, Khuzdar, Mastung, Loralai, Barkhan, Turbat, Washuk, Hingol, and Gadani, are also expected to receive heavy rainfall, with risks of flash flooding in streams and hilly terrain.
Precautionary Measures and Official Response
The NDMA has directed provincial and district administrations, PDMAs, rescue services, and law enforcement agencies to remain fully prepared with personnel and equipment. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, relocate valuables and livestock to safer areas, and keep emergency kits ready. Caution has been urged around submerged roads, electrical poles, and waterlogged zones to prevent accidents.
