United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives caused by devastating flash floods in Pakistan and India, assuring that the UN stands ready to extend support if requested by the affected governments.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief conveyed his condolences to the families of victims and expressed solidarity with communities grappling with the disaster. “We stand ready to assist should it be requested,” the statement added.
The scale of destruction has been severe in Pakistan, where at least 323 people lost their lives in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) alone after two days of relentless rains. The nationwide death toll has now risen to 657, with authorities struggling to cope with widespread damage.
This is not the first time Guterres has shown solidarity with Pakistan’s flood victims. In 2022, he visited the country to witness the catastrophic damage caused by monsoon floods, particularly in Sindh and Balochistan.
Meanwhile, Pope Leo XIV also offered prayers on Sunday for those affected in Pakistan, India, and Nepal, expressing closeness to the communities facing hardship. He prayed for the victims, their families, and all those enduring the consequences of the calamity.
