In a strategic move to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen regional connectivity, Pakistan and Iraq have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch a direct ferry service between Gwadar Port and Umm Qasr Port. The initiative aims to enhance religious tourism and maritime trade between the two countries.
The agreement was signed during a meeting in Islamabad between Pakistan’s Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, and a delegation from the Iraqi Embassy led by Deputy Head of Mission Abdulqadir Sulyman Alhimiri.
Minister Chaudhry called the ferry initiative “a new chapter” in bilateral cooperation, highlighting its role in linking cultural and religious bonds while aligning with Pakistan’s blue economy strategy. The service is expected to significantly benefit Pakistani pilgrims travelling to Najaf and Karbala, particularly during Arbaeen, by offering a viable sea route alternative to land travel through Iran, which has been recently restricted.
The ferry service is also envisioned to stimulate port activity and supply chain development between the two nations, creating new business opportunities in the maritime sector.
Beyond religious tourism, the two sides explored ways to expand trade ties. Pakistan expressed its interest in boosting exports of pharmaceuticals, meat, and rice to Iraq, while also proposing increased imports of Iraqi oil. Minister Chaudhry also highlighted Pakistan’s capacity to supply potassium sulphate through an operational facility in the Gwadar Free Zone.
In FY2024, Pakistan exported goods worth $54.29 million to Iraq and imported petroleum products valued at $145.46 million, indicating potential for a more balanced trade partnership.
Additionally, Minister Chaudhry sought Iraq’s support for Pakistan’s candidature in the upcoming International Maritime Organisation (IMO) elections. Mr Alhimiri responded positively, assuring Baghdad’s backing.
The maritime ministry is also working to establish future ferry routes with Iran and GCC countries to further broaden regional connectivity.
