China has reaffirmed its backing for ASEAN’s peace initiatives as Cambodia and Thailand work toward easing border tensions. Speaking on Tuesday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized China’s commitment to promoting dialogue and stability in the region.
The ongoing General Border Committee (GBC) meeting between Cambodia and Thailand, taking place in Malaysia from August 4–7, marks a significant step in advancing ceasefire efforts. China has also been invited to participate in a special session of the GBC scheduled for August 7.
Guo highlighted the impact of the recent trilateral informal consultation held on July 30 between China, Cambodia, and Thailand, noting that no new clashes have occurred since the talks, and both sides have begun implementing the ceasefire.
He praised Malaysia, the current ASEAN chair, for facilitating multilevel communication aimed at developing a robust ceasefire monitoring mechanism. Guo noted that such cooperation is essential to achieving a lasting resolution.
China has been in continuous contact with both Cambodia and Thailand, as well as Malaysia and other regional partners, to support the peace process, reinforce the ceasefire, and encourage diplomatic dialogue.
“China will continue to support ASEAN-led peace efforts, uphold fairness, and contribute constructively to improving Cambodia-Thailand relations,” Guo concluded.
