A Chinese envoy on Friday emphasized the need to continue promoting a political solution to the Ukraine crisis through dialogue and consensus-building efforts.
Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, noted that Russia and Ukraine have recently made progress by implementing earlier agreements, including the exchange of prisoners of war and remains of fallen soldiers. He highlighted that the third round of direct talks resulted in new consensus on continuing humanitarian cooperation.
Welcoming these developments, Geng urged both parties to sustain the peace talks, expand common ground, and strengthen mutual trust in pursuit of a comprehensive and lasting peace agreement.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, he expressed deep concern over the ongoing large-scale drone and missile strikes by both sides, which have led to significant casualties and damage to infrastructure. He called for maximum restraint and strict adherence to international humanitarian law, emphasizing the need to avoid civilian harm and work toward de-escalation.
Geng also pointed out that both Russia and Ukraine have expressed willingness to restore peace in Europe, while international stakeholders continue to send positive signals and engage in diplomatic efforts to end hostilities.
China welcomes all peace-oriented efforts and encourages both sides to demonstrate political will and flexibility. He called on the international community to unite in promoting dialogue, fostering consensus, and taking tangible steps toward a political resolution.
Reaffirming its neutral stance, China reiterated its commitment to facilitating peace talks. Geng said China will continue playing a constructive role by mediating diplomatically and maintaining open communication with both Russia and Ukraine.
