Emergency protocols have been activated at Mangla Dam amid a potential threat from India, which may release 400,000 cusecs of water.
The area’s deputy commissioner warned that such a release could severely impact the surrounding regions of the dam.
In response, all precautionary steps have been taken, and the public is being urged to rely only on official information and avoid believing in unverified reports.
Torrential rains have also heightened the risk of a dangerous water level rise at Tarbela Dam.
The district administration has issued emergency alerts, with announcements being broadcast through mosques to warn residents of possible danger.
Tarbela Dam officials have confirmed that the water level has reached a critical threshold, and there is a strong chance of a major flood entering the dam.
A spokesperson noted that the current water level at the dam is 1,530 feet, nearing its maximum storage limit of 1,550 feet, with an inflow of 333,000 cusecs and an outflow of 332,600 cusecs.
If the flood intensifies, the dam administration plans to increase water discharge to 400,000 cusecs.
Relevant departments, including rescue teams and WAPDA officials, are on high alert and closely monitoring developments.
Authorities have instructed residents in low-lying areas to evacuate and relocate to safer zones.
Meanwhile, 3,500 megawatts of electricity are being generated from Tarbela Dam’s 17 power units.
Due to continued rainfall and glacial melt, river water levels in Punjab are steadily rising. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has directed local administrations to remain on standby.
A PDMA spokesperson reported low-level flooding in the Indus River at points including Tarbela, Kalabagh, Chashma, and Taunsa.
The Chenab River is also experiencing low-level flooding at Khanki, where water inflow is 340,000 cusecs and outflow is 320,000 cusecs.
Rising water levels are also being observed in the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers, which are under constant monitoring.
