China has rejected recent US claims regarding the growing tensions in the South China Sea and claimed that the US government of provoking unrest in the area and undermining regional trust. Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, called the accusations “groundless.”
During a debate at the UN, Fu spoke in support of multilateralism and the peaceful resolution of disputes, delivering a direct response to the remarks made by a US spokesperson. He emphasized China’s historical and legal grounds, stating that China has indisputable sovereignty over the islands and waters in the region.
Fu said, “The United States, in complete disregard of the historical context and objective facts concerning the South China Sea, has been stirring up trouble, sowing discord, and undermining regional trust.”
He stressed that China does not recognize the 2016 arbitration ruling in The Hague, which rejected China’s claims. He referred to the results as “so called” and firmly denied any arguments or actions related to it.
Fu noted that the region remains largely stable, crediting China’s cooperation with ASEAN countries. He stated that issues such as freedom of navigation and overflight have never been a problem.
Fu further condemned the US, pointing out that it has not signed the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, yet continues to make authoritative and judgmental statements. He also criticized US military activity in the area, including the deployment of weapons and persistent reconnaissance missions near Chinese territory.
“Who is stirring up trouble in the South China Sea and messing up the region? That is something everyone clearly knows,” Fu said. “Who is coercing and bullying and endangering the freedom of navigation in the South China Sea is also self-evident.”
The Chinese envoy emphasized that China prefers to handle disputes through communication and mutual respect rather than through foreign interference.
