Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has instructed that digital transactions be made more affordable and accessible to the public to accelerate the transition toward a cashless economy in Pakistan.
Presiding over a meeting in Islamabad on Monday, the Prime Minister ordered the formation of three key committees: the Digital Payments Innovation and Adoption Committee, the Digital Public Infrastructure Committee, and the Government Payments Committee.
These committees will be responsible for proposing recommendations to simplify payments between the public and businesses, as well as between the government and the private sector. They will also raise awareness of digital systems, operationalize the Pakistan Digital Authority, and formulate a national digital master plan.
The Prime Minister further directed that the Raast Digital Payment System be implemented across both federal and provincial levels to enhance the reach and efficiency of digital transactions.
He emphasized that a robust digital transaction system is essential for ensuring economic transparency.
Shehbaz Sharif also instructed that all transactions between the public and private sectors should gradually shift to cashless modes.
The meeting reviewed the progress of the country’s transition to a cashless payment system. It was highlighted that 40 million users are currently utilizing the Raast platform, and efforts are underway to expand its user base.
Officials also shared that, as part of the Smart Islamabad Pilot Project, the Ministry of Information Technology is working to make Islamabad Pakistan’s first fully cashless city.
