China, ECB pledge stronger cooperation, greater openness as Chinese Premier meets ECB President.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang held talks with European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde in Beijing on Thursday, where he emphasized the need for greater openness and stronger cooperation between China and the EU.
Highlighting the 50th anniversary of China-EU diplomatic relations, Li expressed China’s readiness to deepen political trust, enhance practical collaboration, and work together to foster mutual development and prosperity.
Li pointed out that China and the EU have highly complementary economies. With China’s vast and expanding market, he noted there is significant potential for collaboration across various sectors.
As leading global economies, Li urged both sides to boost multilateral coordination, advance openness and partnerships, and play a more active role in global economic recovery and governance reform.
He also stated that China is prepared to collaborate with the ECB on reforming the international monetary system, reaffirming China’s commitment to further opening up and sharing its growth opportunities with the world.
Lagarde warned against the negative consequences of trade and tariff wars, advocating instead for multilateralism and expanded cooperation as the best path forward.
She added that the ECB is pleased to launch a new meeting mechanism with China for central bank governors, aiming to strengthen dialogue with Chinese financial institutions, broaden cooperation, and jointly confront global challenges.
