Two of China’s major inland railway hubs, Alashankou and Horgos, located in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, have jointly handled more than 10,000 China-Europe (Central Asia) freight train journeys since the start of 2025, according to China Railway Urumqi Group Co., Ltd.
This surge in rail activity accounts for over half of all China-Europe freight trips so far this year, reinforcing the critical role of Xinjiang in maintaining the global supply chain’s efficiency and stability.
Alashankou and Horgos Drive Connectivity
Alashankou, also known as Alataw Pass, is currently operating 124 freight train routes connecting China to 21 countries, including Germany and Poland. Horgos, another vital rail port, supports 89 routes reaching 18 countries and 46 international cities and regions.
In terms of cargo volume, Alashankou has moved over 9.77 million tonnes of goods in 2025 so far, a 3.7% increase from the same period last year. Horgos, showing even stronger growth, has transported 7.96 million tonnes, marking a 20.3% year-on-year rise.
