Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for urgent and comprehensive efforts to safeguard lives and property in response to the recent floods and geological disasters triggered by heavy rainfall across parts of China.
In his capacity as general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, Xi issued key instructions to guide flood control and disaster relief efforts.
He emphasized the importance of conducting thorough search and rescue operations for those who are missing or trapped and insisted that residents in high-risk flood zones be swiftly evacuated and resettled to prevent further casualties.
Xi also directed authorities to prepare for worst-case scenarios, assign clear responsibilities, and rigorously implement flood control strategies. He called for the reinforcement of vulnerable areas, precise monitoring, and the scientific deployment of personnel and relief supplies.
He stressed the need for rapid emergency response to ensure maximum protection of lives and property amid escalating threats.
Heavy and continuous rainfall has recently impacted eastern, northern, and northeastern China, resulting in devastating floods and geological disasters that have caused significant casualties in regions including Beijing, Hebei, Jilin, and Shandong.
Premier Li Qiang, in a related directive, urged national flood control bodies to support local governments in strengthening their response efforts.
Li, a member of the CPC Politburo Standing Committee, emphasized the importance of enhancing extreme weather forecasting, rigorously inspecting river and reservoir embankments, and improving assessments to prevent urban waterlogging.
