Chinese President Xi Jinping has praised the contributions of late Chinese leader Jiang Zemin and called for continued efforts to advance socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Xi made the remarks on Monday at a grand gathering in Beijing marking the centenary of Jiang Zemin’s birth.

Around 6,000 people attended the ceremony at the Great Hall of the People. Senior Chinese leaders, including Premier Li Qiang, also attended the event.

Xi Praises Jiang Zemin’s Contributions

Xi described Jiang as an experienced communist leader who made major contributions to China’s development.

He highlighted Jiang’s role in advancing reform and opening up, improving living standards, and promoting socialism with Chinese characteristics into the 21st century.

Jiang also served as general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee from 1989. He died in 2022 at the age of 96.

Focus on Party Leadership and Governance

Xi said Jiang believed that stronger Party leadership becomes increasingly important as China develops economically and continues reform.

Therefore, Xi called for continued efforts to strengthen Party leadership and improve Party governance.

He also stressed the importance of strict Party self-governance and maintaining the CPC Central Committee’s centralized and unified leadership.

People-Centered Development

Xi also highlighted Jiang’s focus on improving people’s living standards.

Jiang considered raising living standards a fundamental goal of economic development. He also promoted the development of a moderately prosperous society benefiting more than one billion people.

Xi called for continued people-centered development and greater efforts toward common prosperity.

Innovation and Strategic Thinking

Xi praised Jiang’s contributions to theoretical, institutional, scientific, technological, and cultural innovation.

He also highlighted the Theory of Three Represents, which Jiang developed as a major contribution to the CPC’s theoretical development.

Moreover, Xi pointed to Jiang’s role in opening China further to the global economy, including China’s accession to the World Trade Organization.

Lessons for China’s Future

Xi said China must continue adapting Marxism to its national context and the changing needs of the times.

He also called for high-quality development and the creation of a new development pattern.

In addition, Xi stressed the importance of building a community with a shared future for humanity and supporting global peace and development.

Resilience in Times of Crisis

Xi highlighted Jiang’s ability to make decisive choices during major challenges.

He specifically referred to China’s response to the Asian financial crisis and the devastating floods of 1998.

Looking ahead, Xi urged the country to remain prepared for risks and challenges. He called for safeguarding China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests while maintaining economic growth and social stability.
